Many garden enthusiasts, as well as farmers, say there is more to growing plants than waiting for warmer weather. They believe that the moon’s phases and the sign it’s in contribute just as much to the healthy proliferation of any plant as the increase of sunlight and warmth.

You can purchase a farmer’s almanac in which the advice given is based on the theories promulgated by Pliny the Elder (a first century Roman scholar and naturalist) which simply states that fruits, vegetables, flowers and herbs that bear fruit above ground should be planted during the waxing phase of the moon which occurs between the new moon and the full moon; whereas bulbs and all root crops should be planted when the moon is waning.

The ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans scheduled plantings when the moon was in a favorable sign. Personally, I wait for the appropriate moon sign to initiate any activity that involves growth. For instance, if I am starting a project I choose a time when the moon is growing in a fruitful sign, such as Cancer.

For those who want to try their luck, the following is a quick guide to planting seeds, both physical and mental. To find out where the moon is on any given day you can either buy an astrological calendar or a farmer’s almanac. Many of the more popular almanacs are eliocentrically calculated, which is fine if you live on the sun. Make sure the almanac you use is geocentrically calculated.
