What are antioxidants and how can they help our bodies?

Antioxidants are found in the form of vitamins, minerals and enzymes. They help to protect our bodies from the formation of free radicals.

Free radicals are atoms that can cause damage to cells that can impair the immune system. An impaired immune system can lead to infections and can cause various degenerative diseases such as heart disease and cancer. Some scientists believe that the damage caused by free radicals is also the basis for the aging process.

Free radicals can be formed from the exposure to cigarette smoke, sun-rays, pollution and even the metabolic process of breaking down stored fat molecules.

The body readily neutralizes these free radicals, but there are many supplements that can be taken to help boost this process and minimize
the damage caused by their formation.

Ginkgo Biloba is an herb that enhances circulation. It has the ability to squeeze through narrow blood vessels to increase the supply of oxygen in the body, including the heart and brain; this can aid mental functioning and relieve sore muscles.

Grape seed extract is a source of oligomeric proanthocyanididins (OPCs), which are unique flavonols that have strong antioxidant capabilities. In addition to the OPCs antioxidant activity, they also help to strengthen and repair connective tissue, including the cardiovascular system.

Green tea helps to lower cholesterol and reduces the clotting tendency of the blood. It is also believed to aid in the burning of fat.

Vitamin A is a powerful antioxidant. It is also necessary for healthy skin and the mucous membrane, which is the . rst line of defense against invading toxins. Vitamin A and beta-carotene also help to destroy carcinogens.

Vitamin C, an antioxidant which can help protect other antioxidants like vitamin E, is also a key player in immunity, as it increases the synthesis of interferon, an antiviral substance the body produces. In addition, vitamin C can incite the activity of certain immune cells.

Vitamin E helps to prevent cells' protective coating from being damaged. It improves oxygen utilization, enhancing the immune response. For the best results from vitamin E, it should be taken with selenium.

Selenium is a component of glutathione peroxidase, which aids in turning harmful hydrogen peroxide into water throughout the body.

Zinc helps to maintain proper levels of vitamin E and the absorption of vitamin A.

It can be helpful to take a combination of antioxidants to get the optimum benefit from these nutrients. As with any dietary supplements, you should always consult with your doctor or pharmacist for a plan that will work best for you.
