Spirulina is an amazing natural gift that has been growing on earth for billions of years. Although it has only recently come into the spotlight, the Aztec tribe had discovered it’s healing properties centuries ago. They would make a paste and ingest it when they were feeling ill. Spirulina is a spiral shaped algae similar to that of kelp and seaweed. It measures half a millimeter long and contains natural vitamins, minerals, enzymes, antioxidants and chlorophyll. Spirulina aids in protecting the immune system, in cholesterol reduction, and in mineral absorption.

One of the most beneficial and startling finds is that spirulina is said to contain 47% more protein than that of a 30g Steak! This means that the protein is unsaturated and readily absorbed by the system and the body’s blood stream, making it perfect for vegetarians, vegans and anemics (Iron deficiency). Most synthesized irons supplements are derived from animal protein such as desiccated liver, which can cause a feeling of nausea, headaches and dizziness, as the cell particle infusion is often too large. Spirulina is also excellent for assisting nutritional balance during menstruation and menopause and is a safe iron supplementation during and after pregnancy. Its properties boost the immune system and promote the body and bloodstream’s natural cleansing processes.

Another fascinating aspect is that it naturally suppresses the appetite, which is why it was originally launched commercially as a slimming aid. This is due the fact that phenylamine which is a chemical drug found in most retail appetite suppressants is actually synthesized from the substance found naturally in spirulina. As phenylamine is a foreign chemical substance it may cause negative or harmful side effects, however, spirulina causes no such effects. A Tip when taking spirulina is to ingest it simultaneously with either fresh fruit or vegetables or vitamin c, as this dramatically increases the absorption of haem iron (iron found in plant matter). Spirulina supplies the nutrients that are essential for helping the body to cleanse and heal. With these nutrients, one can feel an immediate effect of increased energy and an overall feeling of well being.
